System Losses in Mission 300 Compact Nations: Comparative Analysis and Pathways for Ghana’s Reform

Africa’s Mission 300 initiative is reshaping the continent’s energy future, and understanding electricity system losses has become central to achieving universal access. Our latest analysis, “System Losses in Mission 300 Compact Nations,” compares seven lower-middle-income African countries highlighting where Ghana stands and what can be learned from regional leaders like Zambia and Tanzania.

The report reveals that while some nations have achieved system losses as low as 11–14% through smart metering, modern grid upgrades, and strong enforcement, Ghana continues to face high losses of 27%. These challenges stem from aging infrastructure, commercial leakages, and weak regulatory compliance.

This publication offers evidence-based insights and strategic pathways for reform emphasizing smart technology adoption, legal enforcement, grid modernization, and sustainable financing. Strengthening these areas will not only enhance efficiency but also support Ghana’s progress toward equitable, reliable, and financially sustainable energy access under the Mission 300 framework.
